Apples, the way October is supposed to taste.
Mendon Mountain Orchards is the kind of stop you plan a drive around. It is a family-owned orchard on Route 4 in Mendon, run by the same family for three generations, with a country store, a bakery, and animals wandering the grounds.
The orchard grows 15 apple varieties on its 24 acres. Most go to the store, and a handful are set aside for pick-your-own in the fall, usually McIntosh, Macoun, Cortland, and Wealthy. The store and bakery stay open year-round, so the pies and cider are there after the trees are bare.
Picking depends on the weather and the trees, so call ahead before you head over.
